It is strange how the secrets that we try so hard to find out have already been discovered ages ago and that too in the most unlikely places and by the most unlikely people. People who lived ages ago in the East have already solved many of the puzzles of the human body.

The Starting Point
The enormous amount of excess fat in the human body has made the keyword ‘weightloss programs’ an instant hit among the common man. No wonder, most of the search engine spiders get a lot of enquiries on this word and the related key words, day in and day out.
Let us dig out the prime reasons behind this problem. It is a matter beyond dispute that there is a direct relation between the food we eat and the weight that adds up. Hence almost all weight loss programs concentrate on making some control on the ‘quality’ and the ‘quantity’ on the food we consume.
Where should we start? Now that you have decided to lose some weight we must of course find an answer to the above question. Let me make it clear that there is no better place than our mind.
We should have a strong resolve towards our aim. Conceive this as a just war towards your good health. As in any war there will be at least one enemy. Here your main enemy would be the basic urge to stuff your self with all the wrong things
Knowing Our Stomach and Body
Will you be able to find another person exactly like you? If the answer is “No,” what made you think that every person’s stomach behaves in the same way, accepting all the inputs in the same fashion. This is a basic mistake we often make.
Believe me, your stomach may not be behaving in the same way as your friend’s stomach does to a particular food item, be it a chicken piece or a burger. We must know that a particular food, which may be good for certain people, may not be suitable for others. Haven’t you heard the proverb, what is wine for Paul may be venom for Peter.
The Indian system of Ayurveda and yoga is considered as the best way to explain the different types of body nature. The basic constituents are classified as five elements.
Five Elements:
Earth: All life forces become inert and inactive in this element and more energy is used to keep it active. People with more weight, flesh, fat etc. are good example of predominance of this earth matter in their body. They do not show any anxiety and are not eager to acquire anything, they try to keep away from conflict and their life is moving slowly. When there is a disorder of this element in the body people become selfish and get attached to selfish enjoyments. It is a neutral element.
Water: It keeps the flow of body and life. But it has a natural tendency to cool down. As there is more than 70% water in the body it plays a very important role in the maintenance of heat and circulation of blood etc. It is a negative element.
Fire: It is creating fire in the body – heats the water. It regulates sight, provides strength to the body by digesting the food, induces hunger and thirst, and also maintains suppleness of muscles and beauty of complexion. It helps thinking and facilitates the discrimination power of the brain. It helps production of antibodies.
In short it is the starter of our body-car. Defects in the same causes anemia, jaundice and other digestive problems, and also causes fainting, epilepsy, derangement of brain besides diminishing eyesight and causing growth of cataract in the eyes, it produces acidity and also creates skin problems ad depigmentation.
That is why great importance is given in eastern therapies to control and preserve the element of fire. It is a positive element.
Air: Air is life itself. It is the strength and conducts every part of our body. It regulates the function of heart, circulation of blood and maintains balance of the body.
It helps respiration and downward movement of stools and urine. It produces sound. Nourishes mental faculties and also the faculty of memory. It moves bile and phlegm, which cannot move in the body by themselves. It is a positive element.
Space: In order that air circulates in the body and maintains a proper balance, there has to be space. If such circulation is blocked, it creates pain even leading to heart attack, paralysis, fainting etc. It is a negative element.

A very new study states that there is a correlation between smaller colon cancer rates and the use of vitamins A,E,C calcium, potassium and folic acid. The study has shown that long-term vitamins use could decrease the risk of colon cancer by 57 percent.
This study was made on an group made of over 500 women and men between the ages of 33 and 62 who were found having colon cancer. They were interrogated about the quantity of vitamins they took before they found out their diagnosis. The patients were asked a lot of questions regarding the dosage, frequency, and duration of the vitamins they took. Two classifications were made: multivitamin packs token once a day and high concentration packs. The study showed that the majority of the patients who took the multivitamin packs took the high potency supplements too.
Most of the studies that predate this one agree that the risks of colon cancer are greatly reduced by using vitamin supplements but none of them was able to identify the specific components of the vitamins that are responsible for this. Antioxidant vitamin and folic acid rich vegetables and fruits are known for lowering the colon cancer risks, but yet again no specific components of these foods were identified.
An increase in the fruit and vegetable consumption rate was tried by several educations programs but none of them had a real success. It is recommended to eat at least five different types of these aliments but in the current society the intake of these foods decrease year by year. Society is being plagued by the fast food industry. These foods are very rich in carbohydrates that are very bad for the health, especialy for people that have a risk of developing colon cancer. Fast food alliments have a very low vitamin and protein content but it seems that the american society became addicted to them. And it’s not just the kids who want this foods, more and more adults start eating only these products.
Knowing the current society, the researchers of colon cancer recommend supplementing the diet with multivitamin packs rather then eating fruits and vegetables because they hope it will be more appealing to the general public.

Wouldn’t it be great if someone invented a way for us to eat whatever we want and still maintain our perfect weight? Just fantasize about eating all of the potato chips, ice cream and pizza we could fit into our stomaches and not gain an ounce.
Yes, it would be a nice fantasy, but IF it should happen, it will be a long way into the future. In the meantime, we have to make our own decisions about what kinds of foods that we put into our bodies.
Thank about this:
Empty-calorie foods contain a very low nutrient/calorie ratio. This means that they have very few nutrients like vitamins and minerals in comparison to the number of calories they contain.
Consuming empty calorie foods is NOT a good choice when your are trying to lose weight. It is even more important to eat nutritious foods when you are eating fewer calories.
What kinds of empty-calorie foods should you avoid?
- Desserts like cake, pies, and cookies
- Ice cream
- Soft drinks (diet ones are okay)
- Potato chips
These foods are all are high in calories (high sugar/fat content) but contain almost no nutritional value.
Nutrient-dense foods, on the other hand, contain the vitamins and minerals that your body needs and should be chosen over empty calorie foods.
A healthy well balanced diet contains nutrient rich foods from the grain products group, along with vegetables and fruits. Choose meal plans that have rice, pasta, potatoes, or bread and then add vegetables and fruit, and lean meats. Limit the fats and sugars added in food preparation and at the table.
And What about Carbs?
The fact is that in any diet that you choose, you will still be eating carbohydrates. Of course, you can’t eat only carbs. Consuming more of one kind of food while nothing from the other food groups, isn’t at all healthy for our bodies. Our bodies require nutrients found in all of the five food groups to stay healthy and to work efficiently.
A sensible, well-balanced diet is now, has always been, and will always be the most permanent way to lose weight.
What IS a carbohydrate?
Carbs come in two forms:
(1) Starches, such as potatoes, rice, pasta, bread and cereal; and
(2) Sugars, such as pies, cakes, soft drinks. Sugars are also contained in fruits and vegetables. So you can see that there are good carbs and bad carbs.
The bad (non-nutritious) carbs are usually found in foods that aren’t good for us. The good carbs are the ones we should choose for good health.
When choosing the calories you will consume from carbs, it is best to choose whole grain carbs.
Whole grains are not processed and still contain the bran and germ so they are higher in fiber and will keep you feeling full for longer time after meals. Choose whole wheat bread, whole wheat pasta and whole grain rice rather than white bread, regular pasta and white rice.
The carbs found in fruits and vegetables are classified as sugars but they are unrefined and are better for you.
The foods that are loaded with refined sugars should be avoided as much as possible no matter whether you are trying to lose weight or not.
If you pay attention to what kinds of calories and carbohydrates that you eat, you will have more success in your weight loss efforts.

Billions of dollars are spent every year by millions of people around the world on vitamin supplements. In 2004 alone, it is estimated, nearly $20B dollars went to supplements. A lot of the people spending their hard-earned money on vitamin supplements believe they are warding off cancer, heart disease, or other conditions just by taking vitamins. Most people don’t know, however, that it is not possible to stock up the nutritional value of many vitamins. Water soluble vitamins and minerals like vitamins B and C are actually eliminated each day (don’t ask me to go into details about how that happens!).
Other vitamins are “fat-soluble” meaning they dissolve in fat. Those include vitamins A, K, D, and E. The fat-soluble vitamins can be more dangerous than water-soluble. What is not used by the body actually ends up in the liver, where it can build up and could potentially be toxic.
You should check with your doctor or healthcare practitioner about whether or not you can absorb the vitamins you want to be taking. That’s the first place to look when deciding what supplement may be right for you. If you are not absorbing a vitamin or mineral as it naturally occurs, you will want to supplement it. Don’t supplement vitamins you are already supplying your body in adequate quantities.
The next thing to consider is if your nutritional needs have changed due to medical conditions like pregnancy or more time spent bodybuilding. These and other conditions have special requirements and you may not be naturally getting enough of certain vitamins and minerals.
Check with your doctor on potential interactions between your supplement, and any medication you are on. It is also prudent to talk to him about whether or not you even need a particular supplement vitamin.
Doctors can find out a lot about your nutritional needs by taking a simple blood sample. She can then see what you may be deficient in, and need to supplement. You don’t want to be taking something you don’t need.
Perhaps moreso in the vitamin supplement world than in other areas of your life, “buyer beware” is an important thing to remember. Vitamin supplements are largely unregulated by the government (in the USA, and even less elsewhere). You will be bombarded with messages about how this or that supplement will keep you safe from cancer or other diseases, with little research to back up such claims.
Be careful, and don’t rely on the supplement manufacturer’s claims alone. The internet is a great place to research different supplement companies and supplements, and of course your doctor is a trained professional. The US Government (FDA) and other agencies also provide free information on supplements they have tested.
